While I am sure they had their uses I have yet to see an actual article
or book or bibliographic mention on uses for them. Possibly they didn't
survive well, but I've never researched them in period.
Obviously many cultures have cultivated them.

Some resources I found after the wife attended the local Gourd
Festival here in Raleigh, NC, USA this last September.
Check your local Farmer's Market. I've seen lots of decorative
ones at ours:
[Bird nests seem like a neat idea only for large birds.
Little ones are too easily pulled out of the nests by
pest birds in my experience and I use longer entrance holes
for my small bird houses. Chickadees - 7/8-1" for example.
I glue in plastic pipe fittings to protect the young that
larger birds cannot reach through.]
