Magdalena and Mor make a very good point.
I waas assuming your reasons for not competing because
that was the issue expressed to me directly by 8
people over the past 2 years. I then took them aside
privately, discussed with them gently what their next
steps on their art form might be for improvement and
then went home much happier.
Now they come to me for advice instead of competing
which was not my intention but it worked out that way.
While I have not experienced these negative judging
issues I must say others have noted them and officers
are working to resolve them.
When I was in charge of the A&S at Cattle Raids, I
first talked to most of the judges (missed one
unfortunately because he came in late and I was
helping people set up their displays).
We first talked about what were acceptable comments,
what bad judging has happened recently so I was sure
we were all "on the same page" as it were.
Then before I told people to pick entries up I went
through EVERY card and read all the comments myself.
Not exciting reading I must say. Reading positive
comments can still be slow going, especially when you
have 80 or more entries/display items.
This I think is time consuming but the only solution.
For those that have received mean comments, I would
say don't keep those sheets. That was someone who
didn't care whether they hurt you or worse, might have
wanted to hurt you because they were jealous of your
skill and succeeded.
The best thing to do with those is report them to
kingdom, then burn them and find the experts to talk
to about your project. This is only partly a solution
because some of my friends have something called "peer
fear".
For those friends I find they are willing to ask me
for advice. If I can't give it, I'm willing to bring
your work to someone else who can. I see that the job
of the A&S officer.
