I fired off that answer quickly and without thinking, and it got me
pondering something. So I am asking for opinions:

Do we have an obligation to attend our nearest neighbors' events,
supporting them even if there is one farther away we might want to
attend? Is that an unspoken assumption? I realized I have been making
that assumption, and I wondered what others think.
