Other good items to send are the comic section from the Sunday paper. It will get passed around faster than anything else that they receive. And the the tabloid inserts like Parade Magazine. This time of year, anything with the NCAA playoffs will be good.
The best way to decide what would appeal is to think about what you would want in you were stranded with little more than the clothes on your back and pre-packed, less than tasty food (usually).

And, from another list, the suggestion of the small travel "baby wipes"
is nice... finding the ones that contain both alcohol and lotion means that
the cleaning effect of the alcohol wipe is enhanced by the cool evaporation,
while the lotion keeps the skin moisturised. On faces and necks, this is
wonderful. On toes in heavy/hot combat boots - this is a godsend.
And if you need to pad the package inside, use newspapers, especially
local ones. Every tiny shred of that paper is going to be read, shared, and
read again. There's always someone who will want to hold onto some articles
because it touches them...
I wonder if the free "auto sale" booklets from the grocery store stand
would be good, once in a while, for "oh, man - when I get back/if I were
there and could get my hands on this one.." moments.
