I think that some of the problem is in the perception of the artisans. At
times I've felt that my competition piece received unnecessarily harsh
comments from the judges, but when I went back and read their comments the
next day, the comments were reasonable and helpful.

As a judge, I have been taken to task for being rude. I believe that my
comments went something like:
"Very good start in this field. Another source that covers this subject
better than XXX and might interest you is YYY"
"Impressive work. Your designs keep improving, and I like that you are
trying new techniques. However, at your level of skill and experience, I
would like to see WWW."

I have heard many rumors of hideous statements from judges, but have never
actually been the recipient of such or have been shown such. Yes, judges
are going to make negative comments. Most judges will try to make such
comments helpful and courteous. Most judges will temper their comments to the
experience level of the artisan.
