Julia brings forth an important point. The soldiers on the lines are
limited in what they can carry, which makes bulky packages of print
materials somewhat less desirable. Also, several gentles have approached me
about centralized distribution for entertainment materials and care packages
for our deployed servicemen. At this time, there is no such group--the
Department of Defense has put a stop to deliveries to "Any Soldier" while
the conflict heats up. You can contact your local Red Cross chapter or view
http://www.adoptasoldier.org/ periodically to learn when the ban has been
lifted. Another approach could be to inquire with Wulfstan regarding other
troops he knows who may not have someone at home with which they exchange
letters.

Greetings all,
Books work only for those at a perminately established base, such as Camp
Doha or the Kandahar Airport. The vast majority of our fighting men (in
Kuwait) are out in the field (or soon will be) with just the packs on their
back and what a few support vehicles can carry. The best thing you can do is
send the books to the Red Cross Station at Camp Doha in Kuwait. I don't know
what would work in Afghanistan, however, I'm sure that someone on the list
has more of a clue than I have since we haven't had to deal with an
Afghanistan doployment.
We are sending care packs to Wulfstan every two weeks. If someone would like
to send some items over to go into the Rec Center and would be willing to
pitch in for the postage, I'm sure Wulfstan would be willing to get them to
the Center. It helps if the packages come from family for security reasons.
Thanks so much for keeping out fighters in mind, It will gladden their
hearts to know that friends (even friends they don't know) are thinking
about them.

Several of our dear friends have been in and out of Kazakhstan, Afghanistan
and Kuwait in recent years. We get many requests from them for paperback
novels, magazines and music CDs.
At first we rounded up books from around the house and mailed them out.
When that resource dwindled to the favorites with which I could not bear to
part, we began to pay visits to the local PTA thrift store. For $0.25 to
$1.00 each you can pick up a number of books that will provide numerous
hours of entertainment for the serviceman *and* benefit your local schools.
While we did try to pick up books to his taste, we found that just about
anything remotely interesting is welcome because the books will be passed
around and traded several times.
I do hope this helps!
