Tabletop Siege Challenge

In honor of the Siege Guild's Sergeant Major and Guild Mistress being
invested as the next Baron and Baroness of Ponte Alto, the Siege Guild is
sponsoring a Tabletop Siege Engine Challenge. This contest is designed to
challenge and amuse all who are interested in siege craft. This contest
will be held at the Ponte Alto Investiture on February 28, 2004. The
challenge and displays will be indoors, but the challenge may be moved
outdoors if space is at a premium.

As the Guild's primary goals are the support of the Atlantian Army on the
battlefield, and to promote general education about siege craft. Tabletop
engines are requested (but not required) to be designed and built as if they
were a full size field ready engine, and must be of a period design. This
will allow the models to be used as design ideas for those interested to
build combat ready engines.

The Rules for this Challenge are as follows:

1) All engines must be of a period design. Documentation is not
required to enter.

2) All ammunition will be the standard sized "Jet-Puff" marshmallows
(approx ½" dia.)

3) Each engine must fit inside a box 12 inch on each side (1 foot cube)

4) There will be three prizes, longest distance, most accurate, and
best over all. Best Over All will be determined by the distance less than
the longest, plus the distance from the center of the target, lowest score
is the winner. If there are enough entrants this will be divided into
classes; catapult, ballista, and trebuchet.

5) All shots will be taken from a standard folding table chosen on
site.

6) The ammunition may not be altered in any way prior to shooting, and
will be provided the competition sponsor.

7) There will be two firing rounds. One round to determine the
distance challenge, and one round to determine the accuracy challenge. Each
engine will have three shots, all will be measured. Distance will be
measured from the table edge, Accuracy from the center of the target.

8) Please check http://siege.atlantia.sca.org/tabletop as these rules
may be clarified when questions arise. Please send questions to
Jonathas at DunCarraig.net

9) Children of all ages, 0~99 are encouraged to enter. Team entries are
more than welcome as it takes more than one to crew a combat engine.

There will also be two display competitions held after the shooting
challenge which each engine may be entered in should the builder desire to
do so.

The first is for the best Historically Accurate design. For this
competition documentation is required, and the engine does not need to
compete in the shooting challenge, but is encouraged to. This competition
will be judged by the educational side of the guild, Guild Mistress
Belphoebe.

The second is for the best Combat Ready design. For this competition a
detailed plan is required, so that others might build this engine from it.
The engine itself must meet all Society and Kingdom laws regarding a field
ready combat engine with the exception of size, range, and ammunition. The
tabletop engine must be a scale model (roughly) of the combat engine, for
example 1/8 scale would mean that a 2x4 on the combat engine would measures
approx ¼ x ½ on the model. For this competition the tabletop engine must
have competed in the shooting challenge without breaking to show that it is
a functional design. This competition will be judged by the combat side of
the guild, Sergeant Major Marcellus.

For a brief time immediately following the shooting competition, while the
display competitions are being judged, the designers and builders of the
engines are requested to attend their engines so the general populace, and
the judges, may talk with them about the design. Remember a goal of the
Siege Guild is to promote knowledge of siege craft to the general populace.

But most importantly have fun siegeing the day!!

Congratulations Signore Marcellus and Madame Belphoebe the next Baron and
Baroness of Ponte Alto!!

Baron Jonathas, Siege Guild Charter member, Challenge Sponsor
