[MR] yeoman archery

A question - it is my desire, as a yeoman archer, to start off as an archer and only turn fighter when I have to, so how do I properly protect my bow hand when I must use a shield? From a period perspective I gather that archers, if they had a shield at all, had a small buckler (16" or so)/ I am assuming a center bar, which would get really messy with a hand cage. SO, I'll need full hand protection. Do I beg the oncoming fighter wait a minute while I get my hand in the glove? Don't use a shield at all (even more authentic and deadly to me!)? Thoughts, please.

My work around for this had been a double sided Mantle and a Torse. I had one side of the mantle with diamonds and the other blank. I wore all my armor and just flipped the mantle to suit how I was fighting at the time. I could switch back and forth between weapon forms when I desired by walking to the back of the field and flipping the mantle, picking up my weapons and returning to the fight. This worked really well during resurrection battles since I could fight the entire battle and save my arrows until when most needed.
The only draw back is that I could not carry back up weapons but since you must discard the bow in a safe manner anyway it worked for me.

so do they have them at pennsic? are my dreams of being just that being
dashed to peices or is there somthing that we could do if there was enough
  interest?
I mean other kingdoms have heavy archers right?
