I have not been in the SCA very long.  Personally, I wouldn't appreciate the surprise. That's just me & everyone is different. So far, I have not been sure what awards people have received at court until court is over & I can ask someone else, because I can not hear what is being said anyway. Am I that hard of hearing? ( my spouse & kids would say so) Well, a little bit.. Maybe more pomp & loud voice heralds?
