Tangenting off from this:

I've studied the role of the herald in period. A lot of times,
heralds would act as aides-de-camp for the king or whomever was
leading the army of which they were a part (for instance, a
baron). I am sure that I am not the only herald who'd be happy to
take a list over to the gate and check who's there and who isn't
before H-Hour. We're still your aides-de-camp. Please let us help
you!
