My two cents, and two scenarios, and three guesses which I prefer:
When it pleased Their Majesties to call me into court to award me with a Pearl, I was not there. I had become totally strung out and mildly sunsick earlier in the day, and gone home. Fortunately, they and I were both at another event the following weekend, and the deed was accomplished.
On the other hand, when it pleased Their (different) Majesties to put me on vigil for my Laurel, the event at which the award would be given had not even been planned. It took place 2 months later. (My reputation for disappearing was well established by the event at which I was put on vigil. Someone was set to mind me, and every time I moved to a different part of the site, all day long, he wandered up and said, "You aren't leaving, are you?")

folks from other kingdoms describing how they were able to plan for and
anticipate their Laurel ceremonies. I don't understand the rationale for
Atlantia's tradition of secrecy, especially given the drawbacks.
