I thank you for your encouraging words, Your Majesty. I have had a bit of a frustrating day so I aplogize if my previous missive sounded a bit "put-off". I purchased my equipment from Northstar Archery, run by Sir Erika, and I believe many people do use her business. From the tone of her regretful email today, I believe she is just as shocked to hear that the Baldar Blunts are not legal as we were! I hope that there will be a very quick resolution to this, as I was very much looking forward to my first Pennsic! My confusion is this: at the last Atlantian University in Bridgewater, VA I took a class in contructing Combat Archery Ammo taught by Lord Siegfried Sebastian Faust whom, I believe, it the Society's Deputy Marshall for combat archery. In his class, he explained how to construct ammo using this egg-shaped Baldar Blunt. This is why I thought this was a new rule, not a longwithstanding one. I was under the assumption that the Baldars had been approved throughout the Society. This has taught a wonderful lesson though: I had read and knew the rules, I just had never taken a measuring tape to the blunt. Now I know it's always a good idea to measure! YIS, Milisandia
logan <dukelogan at bellsouth.net> wrote:these rules were not dropped on anyone. they already exist in both the armor standards and the weapons standards on a society level. they are:
A.1.c. Face guards shall prevent a 1-inch (25.4-mm) diameter dowel from entering into any of the
face guard openings.
and, no weapon is allowed on the field that is less than 1 1/4 diameter to prevent it from entering the ocular of a legal helm. the bolts that entered helms recently were egg shaped (or equivalents) and did not meet these long standing standards. they should have been failed before they were used. however, they were missed and fortunately nobody was severely injured.
unfortunately many people bought this equipment before it was properly tested. that is the fault of the manufacturer and not the sca or the marshallate. i would bring my case tot he business that sold you the equipment under the guise that it was legal for combat within the sca.
i hope that you will reconsider altering your plans and that you can find speedy resolution with this equipment. i can sympathize with spending money on gear and your frustration being told is was not legal. my helm costs me $500 alone and i would hate to have to think about buying another one because it failed to comply with the rules.
if there is anything i can do to assist you please let me know.
regards
logan

I would like to pass along information provided to me from NorthStar Archery. Sir Erika sent this information to me because I have invested $160.00 in ammo in the last 2 weeks in order to prepare for upcoming events. IMHO, this is exactly the reason that the SCA cannot build up the membership it wishes: newcomers who would like to participate must put out untold sums of money in order to have what is needed, and then rules, although needed for safety purposes, are passed with no prior warnings and no waiting periods before the laws take effect, so that someone like me who has invested every spare dime in the equipment are now screwed when this rule takes effect. This has now taken money from the Kingdom as well, as I will now have to cancel my Feast of Thirty, Sapphire Joust, and Pennsic reservations because I would be forced to come up with another large sum of money to participate in the activities I enjoy. This is a horrible way to run this part of the organization: Due to problems and concerns with combat archery blunts partiallypenetrating helms 1/2"or more the following rule will be effective April 20th, 2003: Any domed CA blunt MUST reach a minimum 1" in diameter at 1/4" distancefrom the tip of the blunt. The blunt must be the full 1 1/4" diameter at a maximumdistance of 1/2" fromthe tip. Any flat-faced blunt must be a minimum of a 1 1/4" in diameter. If thetop of the bluntis foam, it can not be compressed into less than a 1 1/4" diameter. The Baldar Egg blunts will not be legal on the combat field withoutapproved modificationto increase the front diameter of the blunt. Any modifications developedfor these bluntsmust be tested using the following three tests;1. Cram Test2. Drop Test3. Shot into the faceplate of a helm test. The results of these tests must be sent to your Kingdom Earl Marshaland/or Kingdom Combat Archery Marshal and the Deputy Society Marshal for CombatArchery, for final approval. If there are any questions, please let me know, THL Tessa the Huntress, Deputy Society Marshal for Combat Archerytessathehuntress at earthlink.net
