Good Gentles,
I have just returned from a training session for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and it occurred to Baron Phillip and I that others in our fair Kingdom might be interested in this event.

The Relays are held in local communities across the United States, and usually run between 12 and 24 hours. Groups, organizations and businesses organize teams of from 10 - 15 to participate. Participation involves raising money for the ACS, then being there for the actual Relay event itself.

The Relay is much more than a money-raising event...though the money raised goes for a good cause: research into treatments and cures for cancer, along with assistance for those impacted by this terrible disease. The main theme of the event is LIFE. It celebrates the millions of people who have managed to survive having the disease by honoring them with special recognitions such as a special lap at the event. It also honors and remembers Survivors as well as those who have succumbed to the disease with a Luminaria ceremony at dusk...a very moving and memorable event.

So...you're asking...what does the SCA, and, in particular, my local group get out of this? Well...in addition to the opportunity to contribute to a very worthwhile cause and to do service for your community, it is a marvelous way to put our organization out in front of the public. In others words...DEMO!! Our Barony (Dun Carraig) has been doing this for a couple of years now. We set up a period encampment at the event, we do the first laps in garb and we do a demo consisting of heavy weapon and rapier fighting, along with dance. We also try to have artisans doing their thing in our encampment. We have stirred up a lot of interest in our group, along with creating a more positive attitude toward the SCA in our areas. We've even acquired use of a great site out of it!!

If you have any interest in this and would like to talk, I'm happy to do so. My e-mail is ekooger1 at comcast.net, and I can be reached by phone at (410)535-2152 before 10:00 pm. If you want to see more about it, go to the Relay website, http://www.cancer.org/relay.

I appreciate your patience with this message...and thank you for your time in reading it and considering participation. If you decide to do so, please be sure to let me know!
