There's a new show called Rough Science that might be described as a sort of medieval-geek-survivor challenge.

Scientists on a tropical island have to use the local flora and resources to solve scientific challenges including map making, paper making, creating multi colors of ink.  They wind up using acacia seed pods as their ink pen.  The clock chimes and what they can do with half a cooking pot are particularly...uh...inventive!
