[MR] raising and lowering expectations

your Grace;
I believe that per Corpora we are only required to make and
'attempt' at being
period. SCA by its very existance in college campuses garuntees
that at last some
of our members will be newbees at pretty much every event.
Further, college students
traditionally are usualy not overly endowed with ducats in thier
purses.
I priced a Panther Regent Pavilion this past week... If my aged
memory serves
correctly a 16x16, sod cloth and set up package woudl set me back
around $1500
that a quite an investment for some...
I started doing reenactments back in 1975 in Colorado with the
American Mtn Men.
Rendevous seperate the period and the mundane. Most of the ppl
who do the blackpowder thing are not in college have good jobs
and can afford to lay out the thousands of dollars to outfit
themselves IN period. Those who cannot for whatever reason or
are just starting and using mundane tents.. are regualted to
'modern camping'. That equates to someone who has not aquired
thier wall tent/pavilion to having to hang out at someone else's
camp if they wish to enjoy the ambience of the event. I still do
rendevous and have started back competition shooting as well.
I own a tent that is period to the 1760 to 1840 era but from
spansih florida and very well documented. But I am not allowed
to use it...why because the anal rententives think, note that
word think it is not period. <<personal grump>>
However I still play in SCA and have just as much if not more fun
with people whoonly "make an attempt".. When one is broke, when
one is just starting out.. then we, as older members should not
decry the lack of period ambience by should show by example how
it should be done. Offer to teach, to help, or to loan out
whatever we can spare to make it better for the rest.
While I admit to being a small person, i always carry more than
enough garb to loan out if need be. My feast gear more than once
has graced high table, while i ate on paper plates in the
kitchen. We, in Rolling Thunder are taught by our elders that
rendering service in whatever way possible to house, crown,
kingdom and society is what this game is about. That includes
offering to help make the period ambience of an event better by
whatever means we can render.
Your Majesty.. rather than decrying the lack of period
ambience... offer a spare surcoat to cover the jeans and instead
of bitching about the bottle of mtn dew.. share a mug to pour the
contents in... then it will be 'in period' will it not..
oopsies yer maj, but you struck a nerve.... (bella slinking back
under her rock and nudging the soapbox back whence it came)

: how far should we stretch those limits then? if we find orange
and green
: hillary tents to be acceptable whats next? i think the trend
has been going
: the other way over the last few years. original containers,
blue jeans
: under tunics, coleman chairs, etc all seem to be the norm these
days.
: personally i find that to be a more disturbing trend. when i
go to a court
: and the couple sitting in nice period style (or at least
resembling a period
: style) chairs, with nice garb, drinking from period vessels
look out of
: place in a sea of jeans and nylon chairs and mountain dew
bottles, i think
: we have become too slack and allowed too much.
:
: just my opinion

:
: Gerlach,
:
: Thanks for the reply however I think you are missing my point.
I realize
: that
: there might be enough cabin space but this is not the first
event
: announcement
: that I have seen that states something like this. I find it a
disturbing
: trend.
:
: Usually when it is stated that there is cabin space it is a
limited amount
: and
: usually it is barracks style camping. There are people who are
not
: comfortable
: with that type of arrangement and/or may not be able to rest in
that type of
: arrangement. If they do not have a period pavillion in this
type of
: situation
: they are then excluded from participating. I have even seen one
event
: announcement (I believe it was a crown tourney or coronation)
that actually
: stated that non-period tents are discouraged.
:
: As I said, I find this attitude disturbing. The SCA has always
been a more
: or
: less inclusive group but this is not what I am seeing with
announcements
: like
: this.
:
: That is the point I am trying to make but thanks for your
differing point of
: view.
