[MR] Re: Queen's Arms with A New "Third Path" Suggestion on the Armory

For what it is worth, I copied the Merry Rose because I had already
received several communications concerning the original post from people
who were NOT on the herald's list. If I had not, I probably would have
left the discussion there, even if the overall discussion would inevitably
have gone to the Merry Rose, given the polling in the April Acorn.

The issue is not really anyone's "Dream". It is a pragmatic --- and
immediate issue --- which is whether to change the Queen's arms.

In that vein, His Excellency Havorc has raised the excellent question of
whether those offended by one tincture of shell would not (should not?) be
offended by another.

His Highness then asked the entirely reasonable question whether it might
not be in the best interests of peace in the family to avoid the issue
entirely by a more radical redesign of the Queen's armory.

Indeed, that is an excellent suggestion. Following the Eastern example
from 1983, why not simply change the armory to "Per pale argent and azure,
a fess wavy cotised counterchanged, overall a wreath of roses proper"?
That is the armory used prior to Niobe's change minus the escallop shell.
It says Atlantia. It says Queen. It even simplifies the armory which is
always a good thing for both heralds and seamstresses!

There is just enough time at this point to get a polling on that armory
into the May Acorn. If the response were positive, it could go out on a
June Letter of Intent which would allow registration of the new armory (and
even notification by Laurel!) in time for grand spiff unveiling and display
at Twelfth Night.

It should be noted that the Administrative Handbook for the College of Arms
simply says that "Submissions involving the branch name or arms of an
active branch must include evidence of support for the action on the part
of a majority of the active members of the branch." While the Queen's arms
might not technically fall under this requirement, I think it is always a
good idea to poll the populace on such matters.

Alisoun, again speaking only personally not as any kind of herald or
officer

P.S. I ALWAYS think that discussion is an excellent thing as long as it
does not descend to personal attacks or inappropriate innuendo. (Those who
read my original posting carefully will note that what I objected to most
in the posting to which I responded was the rather personal attack on Her
Highness!) If this discussion had not occurred --- or had stayed in the
rather specialized arena of the heralds list --- the excellent third path
might not have occurred to His Highness --- or to anyone else.

However, both the original post from Thyra and the response from Mistress
Alisoun had no place on this list to begin with. That was not gracious,
courteous or honourable. It has also helped to tarnish, however slightly,
the bright golden Dream we all carry in our hearts, which is the reason we
joined the SCA in the first place. From here on, we all have a choice: we
can continue to participate in this discussion, tarnishing everyone's
Dream;
or we can stop participating in this discussion and help repair some of the

damage that this has caused to Atlantia. Since I don't appreciate having
my
Dream tarnished, I know what I'm planning on doing.

Yr eiddoch yn gywir,
Baroness Olwen de Montgomery
