In all this discussion, very little has been mentioned about the teaching and 
position of Orthodoxy. The position of the Orthodox church on heresy is that 
any individual, including the Bishop of Rome (primer inter pares) can err, 
but that an Ecumenical Council (once it agrees on and proclaims doctrine) 
cannot. Councils could be pretty raucous and beligerent affairs--including 
fistfights and the occasional murder, but when the shouting was over, 
doctrine was DOCTRINE.
Othodoxy acknowledges only 7 Ecumenical Councils (of which Vatican II was NOT 
one, unfortunaely. ) And Orthodoxy DID reverse itself ONCE ...over the mater 
of the sacred ikons. I recommend to any interested party "The Orthodox 
Church" by Bishop Kallistos (Timothy) Ware.
The schism between Orthodoxy and Catholicism is still very much alive, 
apparently. There is trouble in Russia at the  moment between the Russian 
church and incoming Catholics. the Baltimore Sun, for reasons best known to 
itself, had an editorial about it!!!
