If I had said, "The Taira family is a load of idiots and pansies," I
would be stating a clearly biased opinion. But if I said, "The Minamoto
hated the Taira and wanted to kill them," I would be stating a fact.
Eogan is stating facts about what other people believed in the past. If
he had said, "You all are heretical," he would be biased. But he is
giving us the definition of heresy, and stating what other people felt
was heretical. To the Catholic Church, what went against the teachings
of the Church was Heretical. He is not saying that the teachings of the
Church were right or wrong, merely that what went against them in period
was considered by religious authorities (the ordained people in the
Church) in period to be Heretical. And if one bishop disagreed with
another, whoever went against the teachings of the Church was
heretical. The heretical bishop may be right, but according to the
definition of Heresy, he was heretical. Galileo was correct, but
because he said things that went against the Church, he was heretical.
