BTW, I was reading a 1587 description of England
yesterday, and in it is mentioned that the knights of
the garter were supposed to carry with them painted
banners displaying their arms surrounded by the
garter, specifically for use while traveling (so they
could hang the banner when staying in an Inn and thus
people would know they were there). I was tickled to
read this, it made me think of people pinning up
painted banners on cabins, and/or leaving their
shields there so friends can find them on site...
