I used to fish the Neuse below the dam east of Raleigh.
In a drought season like we're having the river gets down
to about the size of a big creek, like maybe twelve feet 
across the top of a really wide dam. 
And it stinks when it is that low. 
Never ate anything I caught in it.
Did give a lot away.

I really wasn't that aware of how many cities dump into it
upstream at the time. More than twenty years ago.

I think it was in a 19th C. reference to Mississippi that by the
time that state drinks the water from the river it's already been
through at least five people upstream starting with Chicago.

That might well apply to the Neuse, especially about now as it's
been really dry for months.  We have half inch wide cracks in the
ground near our trees it's so dry in Raleigh.
