You can use a regular sewing machine to sew through canvas. 
Use size 118 needles and walk the machine over seams that give you
difficulty.
As long as you're not going into a production with multiple tents, a
regular home machine is fine. Just remember you dont' want to force the
machine (particularly if its' a newer model with plastic gears) to do
anything it doestn' want to. 

My first pavilion was sewn on a cheapie, plastic-parts machine I bought
thru a mail order. And I made 2 pavilions with that one.
