I wanted to pass along a tip I picked up from one of
our laurel's for getting a more period look on painted
furniture: use milk paint!

Milk paint can be purchased on line or at better
woodworking stores. It's pricey (about $10 a pint) but
the results are great (that paint's not going to chip
off, believe me). And for decorating furniture,
chests, etc, it gives a much nicer look than using
acryllics. The paints I've found come in powdered
form, and you mix them with water. From what I've
read, you don't use a primer first, and they don't
really need to be covered with a sealer, either.

I'll be using milk paints on the two chest's I'm
making (using Master Robbyan's plans), and I'll bring
one along to a fall Kingdom event for people to see
how the paints look...

Cheers!
