i believe the device you are looking for can be found
in most quilting stores (or check out some quilting
sites online). Since bias tape is used to place a
final edge a quilt and they will have a great many
supplies we use (or could use) to make our garb. Check
your local quit shop or guild and ask them for help.
There is a really great and easy to use booklet on
making bias tape that most quilters are very familiar
with, but if you go to any basic how to quilt book in
the bookstore, you'll see the same method... It
tells/shows you exactly how to cut, fold sew, draw
lines for and cut again to make perfect bias tape very
quickly all starting with a square of fabric. If you
want percise directions, feel free to email me and
I'll try to find them for you. I learn better when
someone shows me, thus why I suggested contacting a
local quilter/quilt shop, but beware... you may not
walk out of there without buying some GREAT fabric and
do dads!!! Bring cash!!!! *S*
Seriously, this/these book(s) will also show you a
very fine way to apply the tape so as to not show a
sewing line and form a very nice edging on your garb.
(Bias tape BTW is stronger and lasts longer than
simply folding material due cross weaving the fabrics)
This book will also give you exact fabric requirements
for different lengths/widths of bias tape needed for
your garb. I have learned a lot about clothing
construction from making quilts... which btw has
historical significance especially with fighters of
our period in their clothing/protection.
Using satin, linen and other fine materials needs
special care, but there are very fine lining/facings
that can be bonded to your fabrics that will help in
the handling of your materials, but it may change the
flow of the material. It just depends on what you are
trying to do...
There is very thin iron on tape available which is 1/4
inch wide for those special projects.... Hint, hint,
hint wonder under works great for holding down your
appliques before running a stitch over it for
protection, but you can also use glue stick for
smaller items....
But another plug for quilting... a good how to book
will also show how to hand applique those fine crosses
and devices onto a court garb, but best of all it will
show you the tricks we all know, to make it seem like
we worked VERY hard and spent a lot of time (opps...
shhhhhhh... you didn't hear that! ) making our pieces!
