Greetings, fellow patrons,

If any Gentle Person in the tavern knows of a period fruitcake recipe, would that person please respond, off list, to my plea. I am certain that fruit cake-like substances existed pre-1600, but, just as the effort to document stollen eventually went bust over guild secrets, I am having trouble with fruit cake. Any help will be appreciated.

On a different topic, I did not realize that the debate over rapier versus heavy fighting was still going on. I have fought both styles and each has its attraction. The personality of the participant seems to dictate the preference. Personally, I like both. But then, I believe that (almost) anything to which you devote your entire concentration can be rewarding.

One of the things I appreciate about rapier fighting is the fact that one cannot become a Peer or King by doing it. As a result, the practitioners practice for the joy of the exercise and not for any tangible reward. As an former sensei used to say, "Training is contant, but meaningless." By which I took him to mean that training is a valid end in and of itself. No cookies required. Just my two pence worth. Barkeep, a round for the house and a pastie for the lad in the corner.
