All for banning the fencers?

<sigh> A good example of why being a great armored fighter isn't a good sign
of a great king. The Crowns I admired the most in tthe last decade were
Stephen and Niobe. They both strongly supported the rapier community. Stephen
even took to the rapier field at practices to teach. THAT is a King to admire
and emulate.

Let's face it --As much as we talk about how Chivalry and Honor are best
displayed, martial prowess and physical courage is the least of it. You can
tell much more about how good a king a man will make by watching him teach
chess than by watching him wield a sword. Is his play thoughtful, ruthless
and cunning? Is he courteous and fair towards his opponents and students? Are
his explainations clear and well spoken? Is he graceful in handling
interruptions?

Tradition and showmanship are the reasons we choose our rulers the way we do;
everything else is rationalization.
