i offer only the truth as i see it
we are not living in the middle ages. if that were the case and we decided
who the king was going to be we wouldnt hold crown every 6 months, right?
so the argument relating what happened then and the world as we know it
bears no meaning. that includes the ability to get your friends together
and beat up the other guys. it also includes being able to take a harder
beating than your opponent (im all for that if we go that way too) . we
dont do that now for the simple reason that only a few of us would ever sit
the throne and sacrifice so much to serve so many. if you actually would
like to imply, that people can rhino hide their way to the crown and become
king and that it wouldnt happen with a popularity contest type crown, you
show yourself as unrealistic.
to show that you can form, train, inspire, pay, whatever a group of fighters
to somehow prove you are a better leader is also asinine. again, i can get
together with 5 or 6 of my friends and their "crews" and beat the remainder
of this kingdom in a field battle. that would be fun for a few of us. but
overall it wouldnt serve this kingdom. i would never support anything that
would suggest that type of inbreeding. winning a field battle is far from
proving that you can lead people (or a herd of cats or whatever). it only
proves that you had better fighters. besides, what does winning a field
battle have to do with being an inspiration to all, regardless of whether
they put on armor or not?
it all seems really simple to me.....

Kingdoms were not won in single combat in period--they were won by
armies. The person who could command a winning team would be displaying
great heroism and all the qualities of a medieval monarch--prowess,
leadership, and the ability to see and utilize the talents of his/her
subjects. With single combat, anyone who simply refuses to take enough
blows can become King. It can be done by brute strength or stubbornness,
and not necessarily provide the best monarch. (I know, it isn't pretty,
but it can happen.)
If, instead, someone has to show the ability to form, train, inspire and
lead a team, I would think that would show more skill in the areas where
we expect our monarchs to shine. Leading an SCA Kingdom is like herding
cats--showing you can herd a few cats first wouldn't be a bad way to
decide Crown. (And would you want the crown to go to anyone who couldn't
find nine other people in the whole Kingdom who would stand with
him/her?)
The Kingdom of Acre, a non-SCA ally of the East, has used a variation of
the team idea for many years, with good success. Maybe the BOD ought to
talk to them.
