The problem being that what is or is not a flame is debatable and
highly variable, while spam is much easier to agree on.

For example, dressing someone down in public, rather than in private,
can be considered a flame, even if the words themselves are courteous.
Sometimes a public correction can fulfill a purpose (generally
education) but a private correction is almost always the first thing to
try.

In the case of Dave, he has been active on SCA mailing lists and
newsgroups for a long time, and is doubtless well aware of the nature
of both spam and flame.
