To all of you who answered my query regarding amydon, THANK YOU!  I have gotten some good detail on how to make it at home by modern methods, as well as where to purchase it. 

Thank you also for the numerous period references, including period instructions for making it, and other recipes from other sources that call for it.  Wow!
