I beleive that the modern names used in the OP database are for use only in
Mordrea's system and are not to be published on line or in any other forum.

Why does she need mundane names?

Lest you think a herald is disagreeing with you, that we should all get our
names registered, let me explain.

Many people who are called into court have not registered a name, or are in
the process and have not had it go through yet. Sometimes the name that they
finally wind up registering is different from the one they went by previously
and is listed on the court report. Maybe it is a different spelling. Maybe
it is a different name altogether.

Sometimes people who have registered names up and decide to change that name
-- maybe even after 10 years in the SCA.

And sometimes people with registered names, who have no intention of changing
their name, simply have it misspelled on the court reports. For instance, my
registered name is Eoghan Og mac Labhrainn. On the various promissory
scrolls hanging in my den, I am "Eogan MacClaren" or "Eogan McLaren" or
"Eogan Og." How is the Clerk of Precedence to know these are all the same
people unless a mundane name is also given?

A few months back I published a letter in our baronial newsletter, the
Pheonix, emploring all of my heralds, when they submit a court report, to
please, in addition to making sure the people's SCA names were complete and
spelled correctly, please also list their mundane names. The reason for this
is to make sure that the people that we recognize in court are honored for
more than the 2 minutes they may be up there. We want to make sure that
there is record of your award, and credit is given where it is due.

Your mundane name is the one thing that we can be reasonably sure will not
change. If it is not published in any public forum, what is the problem with
using it to keep track of the awards and recognition you recieve in the OP
database? Your mundane name is given to SCA, Inc, when you join as a member.
It is given to the College of Heralds when you submit a name or heraldic
device. I see no problem with giving it to Mordrea, especially when it makes
her difficult job a bit easier.

Aye,
Eogan Og
