Hm. I once worked for a non-profit-a 501(c)3 corporation, the
same IRS classification as the SCA. The members weren't
individuals, but the state-level groups, in which the powers
similar to those of shareholders in a for-profit were vested,
including ousting directors and chief officers. In order to
remain members, though, the national organization expected the
state-level groups to kick in a certain amount of money. Sounds
normal enough to me.

Nope. The "mediaeval structure" has nothing to do with the
external business end.
