(Please cross-post at will!)
Below is the description of the main competition to be
held at Kingdom A&S Festival in March. There will be
a separate posting made regarding the competition for
artisans age 17 and under. Full information about all
activities and competitions will be mailed to local
MoAS around Oct. 1st. But I thought it would be
helpful to post about this competition sooner rather
than later.

-----------
Competitions at Kingdom Arts & Sciences Festival
1. The Pentathlon in Persona
THE BASICS: Pentathlon entrants must enter five (5)
items (no more, no less) from at least three (3) of
the competition categories. Each of the five entries
must be directly connected to the persona of the
entrant's choice--could the entries have been owned,
made, or consumed by that persona? The five items will
be displayed together, and the entrant must include a
brief description of their persona. The documentation
for each item should include a line clearly explaining
the connection between the item and the persona.
The 'persona' chosen by the entrant need not be their
regular SCA persona. Only one persona per entrant!
The Pentathlon is limited to static arts and sciences
only. There will separate performance activities at
the event.
THE CATEGORIES (subcategory examples in parentheses):
I. Studio Arts (calligraphy, illumination, painting,
drawing, sculpture, wood carving, etc.)
II. Costuming (all periods of garb, embroidery, lace,
hats, shoes, etc.)
III. Pyrotechnica (metal casting, blacksmithing, metal
armor, gold/silversmithing, glass blowing,
lampworking, stained glass, lapidary, pottery,
ceramic, etc.)
IV. Household Arts (cooking, brewing, basket weaving,
soap making, toys, games, herbal products, spinning,
weaving, dyeing, furniture making, etc.)
V. Courtly Arts (poetry, short prose, music
composition, heraldic display, horse bardings,
research papers. NOTE: Research papers must be
submitted to the KMoAS no later than Feb. 20, 2002.)
THE AWARDS: 1. PENTATHALON CHAMPION, based on total
score (all five entries, added). In case of a tie,
the winner will be decided by a committee consisting
of at least one judge, the KMoAS, and TRM. 2. ARTISTS'
CHAMPION, based on the vote of the entrants. Each
entrant will be given one (1) token to leave at their
favorite display. Tokens will be counted by judging
deputy(ies) no sooner than one half hour before
entrants are to retrieve their work. In case of a tie,
multiple Artists' Champions will be recognized. 3.
HONORABLE MENTIONS (awarded at discretion of KMoAS in
consultation with the judges): outstanding work by a
novice; outstanding documentation of persona; and
"work of beauty" awards for individual items. Other
awards as may be desired by TRM.
MORE FINE PRINT: 1. The competition is open to all SCA
participants. 2. Items entered into competition must
have been completed within the past two (2) years. 3.
Documentation is required for all items. 4. Entrants
will fill out a single registration form listing all
their entries. Forms will be available on line and
from your local MoAS. Entrants are strongly
encouraged to arrive at the Festival with their forms
already filled out. 5. A more complete listing of
subcategories is available on the Entrant's
Registration Form. Unlisted items will be assigned a
category at the discretion of the KMoAS. 6. Judging
will be done using the new Festival judging forms,
also available on line and via local MoAS officers.
Entrants are strongly encouraged to familiarize
themselves with these forms so they understand the
criteria the judges will be applying to the entries.
7. The Entrant Registration Table will open at [9am?]
and close PROMPTLY at [11 am?]. Judging will begin at
[11:30 am?]. 8. Judges may enter the pentathlon, but
may not enter items in subcategories they are judging.
For example, a judge evaluating calligraphy and
illumination (a subcategory of Studio Arts) may not
enter a scroll into competition, but could enter a
painting or an icon.
2. Youth Competition (will be posted soon!)
