Subject: Help?
A resident in the building next to mine and I discussed taking the
apartment kitty (apparently called Leila by the residents) in to be fixed
and to have her shots last week. We talked about splitting the cost.
The management at the apartment changed in the last several weeks. Two days
after I had this conversation, we all had notices posted on our doors that
said animal control would be coming out Monday (today) to pick up Leila and
that all residents were to remove all food and water bowls immediately.
The notice went on to state that anyone who left food or water out for
Leila would be fined a $300 unauthorized pet fee.
I called my old vet and arranged to board Leila overnight tonight and to
have her shots and spay done on Tuesday. I also have a call in at Animal
Medical,
where I take Jade and Caroline takes Sydney, to hopefully get Leila into
their adoption program.
I drove across town this morning and dropped Leila off at my former vet's.
When I arrived at work there was a voicemail from the vet asking me to call
them.
Apparently, Leila has FIV. They told me that she could live a very long
life but would have to be an indoor only cat because if she caught a cold
or anything else from another feline, she would get very ill and perhaps
even die. Additionally, because there is no vaccine for FIV she could
spread her illness if she were to be around other cats.
To spread the illness, the cats involved must exchange bodily fluids (ie
fight, share a food or water bowl or a litter box, etc.). The vet
indicated it couldn't be spread by touching her and then touching another
cat.
Leila is an incredibly warm and affectionate kitty. She didn't make a
sound when I crated her up and drove her to the vet's this morning. She
didn't even cry while
she was at the vet.
While she is great with people and kids, she tends to be aggressive with
other cats and so was going to need to go to a single cat household anyway.
She is blind in one eye. The vet thinks that she probably got an eye
infection and that with the FIV, her body wasn't able to fight it off until
after it had left her blind in that eye.
She would make someone an absoulely wonderful indoor cat. Unfortunately,
everyone who has been feeding her at the apartments already have cats.
With the FIV, I am uncertain that she will be eligible for adoption through
one of the local programs.
Can you help me find her a home by posting this to the Merry Rose for me?
She is truly a wonderful cat. She would have to be an indoor only cat and
would have to be the only cat at the residence.
Thanks,
Courtney
