from Aileen:
We are all stunned by this.  My husband is currently locked down on Ft Bragg;
besides our ties to these damaged parts of our country via SCA friends, my
11-year old daughter has two good friends, one who lives in Manhattan and
whose father works in the WTC complex, and another whose father works in the
Pentagon. How different this world will be for our kids to grow up in!!
My father sent the following from a Navy Chaplain friend, which I am finding
helpful tonight, when the world seems full of smoke and darkness.

>>As I've begun to reflect on these things, several prayers from my
tradition's Book of Common Worship came to mind and I've included them
below. I invite you to consider joining me in making them a part of your
prayers today (as a Christian denomination, our prayers end with an appeal
through Jesus Christ; I invite those of other traditions to modify them as
needed).

>>I recognize that these prayers call us to look beyond immediate circumstance
and challenge us to look beyond our human desire for vengeance. Parts of
them are hard for me to say this day. Faith often calls us to look outside
ourselves."

For those experiencing tragedy

Out of the darkness we cry to you, O God.
Enable us to find in Christ
the faith to trust your care
even in the midst of pain,
so that we may not walk alone
through the valley of the shadow of death,
    through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In a Time of International Crisis

    Eternal God, our only hope,
our help in times of trouble:
show nations ways to work out differences.
    Do not let threats multiply
or power be used without compassion.
May your will overrule human willfulness,
so that people may agree and settle claims peacefully.
Hold back those who are impulsive,
lest desire for vengeance overwhelm our common welfare.
Bring peace to earth, through Jesus Christ,
the Prince of Peace and Savior of us all. Amen.

For Those in the Military

Righteous God, you rule the nations.
    Guard brave men and women
who risk themselves in battle for their country.
    Give them compassion for enemies
who also fight for patriotic causes.
Keep our sons and daughters from hate that hardens,
or from scorekeeping with human lives.
Though they must be at war,
    let them live for peace,
as eager for agreement as for victory.
Encourage them as they encourage one another,
and never let hard duty separate them
from loyalty to your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
