This message is from my husband, Steve Spies (known in the SCA as Owen
Sherard Trahern), who has asked me to forward it to the Atlantia list. Nancy

<< Rumors will abound for the next few days/weeks. Let's put this one to
rest.
 1) There is no "national" water supply. Communities get their water from
different sources. In many cases these are wells, rivers, or lakes. Some
 communities may use all three.
 2) The hazardous materials response community knows that, "Dilution is the
solution to pollution." This means that lots of water can dilute many
hazardous materials to non-hazardous levels. Therefore, contaminating a well,
lake, or river requires enormous amounts of material (think about the tons of
industrial waste pumped into the various rivers and lakes, yet we still get
safe water from them). Contaminating a well is also hard to do because the
well heads may be guarded or secured.
 4) Alot of our water goes through treatment plants that filter out, absorb,
or
 kill the hazardous materials.
 5) Water distribution systems, i.e. water towers or pumps downstream from the
treatment plant, may be susceptible. However, they can be defended and
shutdown if contaminated. This limits the number of casualties.

If you're still concerned, get bottled water. However, don't they get it
from
 wells? SS >>
