Gosh, I heard "Run Like Hell" and "Eve of Destruction" on Wednesday the
12th. I also heard "Eye of the Tiger" and a whole bunch of
patriotic/rousing material...
What a station chooses to play is up to them; if they've developed a
corporate policy that they're laying off those songs for awhile, they are
free to do so. If you don't like it, 1) call the station and request the
song be restored to the playlist, 2) if they refuse, tell them you'll be
switching radio stations and then 3) do it. The normal response to people
_fighting_ censorship is, "Hey, people are free to vote with their dial.
If they are offended, they can change the channel." I suggest this is
also the most sensible response to stations _practicing_ censorship.
Unless you live in a very small market, I'm sure you can find someone
who's still playing "Jet Airliner".
Pop radio has had corruption scandals forever, and "payola" is still a
common practice. As long as their market consists substantially of pret
eens, teens, and other people who have trouble forming their own opinions
without media direction, nothing's going to change. Consider that a few
networks control substantially all the available TV broadcast, and no one
has died yet. Perhaps the proliferation of mp3 stations parallels the rise
of cable access shows. If there's something that people really want to see
or hear, they'll find a way.
