It's not so much that the bar is rising: it's that we're standing on
the shoulders of giants. If you consider the area of renaissance
dance, for example, 20 years ago the wealth of primary and secondary
sources that we now have weren't as available. I don't think it takes
more work now to get a Laurel in dance, but you can learn a lot more
in the same amount of time. And taht's true even if you live far from
a university library.
