When my husband first moved to Maryland (from the midrealms),
he didn't find the local SCA group. But he was involved with
Dagorhir when I met him. We went to a few battles, and attended
a weekend event called Ragnorok. Along with us on that trip
was our new puppy (now an old dog :-), who became an unofficial
mascot for the group my husband was fighting with. Our dog's
official AKC registered name is Samson the Shindar.  

And I know a few of the people from Shindar are in involved
in SCA now. Unfortunately our paths have not crossed.
