I gotta agree. Also, I see a big difference between
helping someone do set up for the event (Wimmet's
example) and helping someone haul stuff from their
cars. I know some ladies who bring WAY too much stuff
and I feel that they should take responsibility for
themselves and plan a bit better. As I get older and
less energetic, I look long and hard at any
unnecessary item before it goes in the van, especially
for a day or weekend trip. I usually try to help
strangers who are struggling to put up their tents
regardless of their sex, especially if rain is coming
on or the sun is rapidly setting.

I have developed a personal pet peeve since I started
going to SCA events with my (gorgeous, teenage) step
daughter. It seems that many men are willing to let
me unload my van and put me pavillion up myself, but
they seem to think that she is incapable of carrying a
basket without assistance. In fact, to some men,
chubby middle aged ladies are pretty much invisible,
so they would never notice that the invisible ladies
were struggling with their burdens or tent ropes.
Carrying things for lovely young ladies who are not
struggling is not courtesy, it is flirting. That's
charming and gallant, I'm all for the propogation of
the species, but its not a kindness if there is a
selfish motive behind it.
