interesting as i tried to use it in place of the nonpareil (for the same
reason) and was told that we could not as the manatee is a new world animal
and it would be heraldically inaccurate.  however, if there really is a need
for yet another level of awards (although i always thought we did what we
did because its what we wanted to do and that awards were not the issue)
then i guess a manatee is better than a conch.

I have been told by two knights that the "manatee" was
chosen to honor Sir Kane (that was his barnyard
animal).  I don't know that this interpretation is
true or not..
