after rereading it i see that it says one OF the good guys.  my first, and
inaccurate reading, was of FOR the good guys.  oops.  that ahmad shah
massoud was one of the good guys is actually correct.  thanks.

The Northern Alliance is the main anti-Taliban group fighting the Islamic
government. I believe Jonathan Blackbow's interpretation is correct: that
this fellow who died and was commander of the Northern Alliance was
therefore against Bin Laden and his supporters and may be interpreted as
favoring our position.
