Keeper of the SCAloss list
----
Nicholas Bogdan
Pemberton Township, Burlington County
Married, 34, daughter age 2 months and son age 6
Computer technician, Marsh & McLennan insurers, 98th floor, North Tower
Nicholas Bogdan was a computer technician and had built his own home
computer. Yet he lived only part-time in the 21st century, preferring instead to
dwell in the Barony of Carillion a thousand or so years ago.
His passion was the Middle Ages, his dream to win a lottery jackpot so he and his
wife, Dorothy, could set up a "household" in the Society for Creative
Anachronism, a medieval reenactment group.
The couple met in 1989, when Dorothy managed a fast-food restaurant in
Hightstown, N.J., and Nicholas came in every day at 12:45 p.m. for a 32-ounce
drink. One of their first dates was an event called "Bellringers."
"Imagine 9,000 maniacs dressed up in medieval-style clothing, and 3,000 of those maniacs dressed up in armor with
wooden swords beating on each other," Dorothy recalled.
When their son, Nicholas, was 8 months old, they attended "Pennsic," a major medieval gathering outside Pittsburgh.
In August, the family grew by a second child, Emily. By then, the couple had drifted away from organized medieval
events but hardly from the spirit of the era. So when Dorothy began thinking of ways to honor her husband's
memory, she took inspiration from the last book he had read, Annals of the Black Company by Glen Cook.
She still is planning to create a medieval household, with authentic utensils, furnishings and costumes, to be called the
Household of the Black Raven.
In the style of the novel's chronicler, Croaker, she already has recorded the events surrounding the death of her
husband, the "Great Warrior." In one section, she described how she and two of his friends went to the Manhattan
armory where families of the missing filed reports and sought information:
"From one side to another, as far as a man could reach, the walls of the armory were covered with pleas and
petitions to find missing loved ones. The heart of the lady broke at seeing such a sight. It saddened her to see how
many families were destroyed by the evil ruler. Rage filled her . . .
"The three were escorted to the chronicler who kept the record of those injured in the attack. The Great Warrior
was not found among the wounded. . . . And so the widow and her honor guard returned home. Throughout the trip,
each in their turn spoke praises of the warrior's honor and of the times they had shared."
