Well, in the Stierbach/Ponte Alto/Storvik/Roxbury Mill/Lochmere/Bright
Hills area they're called "parking lots". :-S

Further south I've usually heard of them referred to as "interstates"
but "freeway" will be generally understood.

The Roanoke Rapids, NC area, just south of the VA/NC border, has lots of
motels. If you can't make it quite that far, try Emporia, VA which is
about 20 miles further north (exit 11 in VA).
