While snopes does some very good things, I have to say that I felt their
response to this particular forward really missed the point. No one is
trying to deny that Sept. 11 was bad. Terrible, in fact. And, of course,
the terrorists succeeded in what they intended to do--we all felt the terror
as we watched those images broadcast over and over. The point is, it could
have been worse. There are some small scraps of comfort to be found. There
were people who survived this tragedy. In addition, I don't think it's so
terrible to remind people that, although the terrorists succeeded in
attacking public symbols of America, we do not need to live in constant fear
that any time we step out the door (or don't step out the door) we will be
attacked by terrorists. Sure, there are some aspects of security that we
need to change, and some things we may never be able to make 100%
secure--but it is still likely that the majority of people in this country
will never be killed by terrorists. Why snopes should take issue with this
particular forward, with its positive and non-harmful message, is beyond me.
