Venice merchants were selling coffee in 1615 and by 1650 Italian street
merchants were selling drinks made with coffee and other ingredients. In 1675,
Charles II banned coffeehouses in England, so there must have been some there
previous to that date. One of the reasons for the ban on the coffeehouses was
a decline in tax revenue from alcohol - men were going to coffeehouses (which
banned women) instead of taverns. Interesting side note - Lloyd's of London
was originally a coffeehouse.
