The scribal track for the University of Atlantia, Feb. 2nd Session to be
held in the Shire of Berley Court:
Track One:
10 to 11 am:
Title of class: Watercolor Versus Gouache
by Maestra Caterina de Forza d'Agro (Kitten Reames)
Description: The basic differences and authenticity of watercolor versus
gouache will be discussed. Then this hands-on class will provide students
with a chance to try out a variety of products: paste watercolors, gouache,
and pan watercolors to see the differences for themselves and decide which
product they prefer.
Length of class: 1 hour

11 am to Noon:
Title of class: Scribal Materials
by Countess Brigit of Mercia
Description: Find out why we use what we use in the SCA and where to
get it -- versus what was used in period. Examples will be available. (If
you have an unusual material or source, bring it to share.)
1:30 to 3:30
Title of class: Gilding on Inscribed Gesso
by Maestra Caterina de Forza d'Agro (Kitten Reames)
Description: This hands-on class will provide students with a lesson on
mixing and applying bole to a prepared gessoed card which they can then
stamp and incise with designs. During the second hour, the instructor will
demonstrate a walk-through of the steps and tools involved in gilding and
burnishing the incised design. Students can then take the card home with
them to experiment with applying composition or actual gold leaf.
Length of class: 2 hours
Fee: $3
Enrollment limit: 5
Auditor limit: 5 (auditors may simply watch and listen or may join a willing
student-partner to participate as a pair using one set of supplies)
3:30 to 4:30
Title of Class: Clerk of the Signet's Policies

Description of Class: This class will cover the policies of the office of
the Clerk of the Signet.

Pigments and Art along the Silk Road, Van Sicklyn Academy of Art, Study the

Track 2:
All Day (10 am to 5:30 pm)
Title of class: Scribal Workshop for Beginners
by the Barony of Marinus Scriptorium (Lady Brandwyn Alston of the Rift)
Description of Class: Introduction to scroll construction in four parts;
layout, calligraphy, gilding and painting. Walk away with a partially
finished scroll. Sit in on part or all of the class.
Limit: 10 (for hands-on participation) Observers welcome
Fee: $20.00 for kit or bring own supplies and $4.00 for handouts. Contact
