I asked this very question years ago when I lived in Edinborough and
was told that it traced back to the time of knights. Most were right
handed and it was easier to reach your opponent (or enemy in the case
of war) if they were on the same side of the body as your sword. Also
the it is hard on horseback to turn your body to present a smaller
target if you have to reach across.
