The Kingdom Webminister has sent a notice that the Kingdom server is
temporarily down due to hackers. The Kingdom main page is the only page
available from the server, which means that event flyers as well as the
Marinus pages (and other groups hosted on Atlantia's server) are not
accessible.
For everyone planning to come to Barnacled Bullfrog tomorrow, I post the
event flyer in full, and apologize for any concern you may have felt that
the pages are down:

The Tavern is Back!
and we have more info!
November 24, 2001
Noon to Midnight
Barony of Marinus
Suffolk, VA
Deep in the salt-encrusted tomes of maritime legend...
lies the story of an infamous tavern said to rise out of
the mists. Many a
sailor has been shipwrecked searching for its warm hall, hearty
fare, and lusty
serving wenches!
The (in)famous tavern, the "Barnacled Bullfrog," is back!
This below-the-salt event functions like a real tavern, complete
with serving
wenches, a barkeep, and rowdy crowds. Tired of being a duke?
Leave your
coronet behind, and come as an alternate, peasant persona! Wish
you could sit
back at ease, and have your food and drinks brought to you while
you chat
with your friends? That's what the serving wenches are for! If
you can bellow,
the wenches can bring!
We will have two well-marked smoking areas. For the sake of our
fellow
SCAdians with asthma and smoke allergies, please smoke only in
those areas.
Banners are welcome to help decorate the hall. Find Marinus'
Baronial Truck
Monkey to hang the banner for you.
The site has a pay phone that can accept incoming calls.
Please use this
number for emergencies: (757) 538-9518
Troll will close at 6:00 p.m.!
Drinking
The tavern will be held at our traditional site at the Planter's
House in
Suffolk, Virginia, and is Dripping WET. Bring your spirits, bring
your ales,
bring your wines! ALL beverages, both of the alcoholic and
non-alcoholic
varieties, will be handed over to the barkeep, who will guard
them well. When
you're ready for a drink, just hand your mug to a serving wench
and ask her to
top it off from your private stock.
When you check in at Troll, you must show a positive ID. Legal
drinking age in
Virginia is 21; underage drinking will not be tolerated, but over
age drinking is
fine, and designated drivers are very much encouraged. Drinkers
will be given
one color site token, and non-drinkers will be given a different
color.
NOTICE: Due to the nature of the event, NO
children's activities are planned and NO child care
will be provided.
Fighting
The heavy weapons fighters will indulge in a BAR FIGHT!
Two-man teams will fight with daggers only, except for whatever
tavern-style
weapons you can bring with you or find in the tavern. All weapons
must be
approved by the marshal; one of the tests will be that you must
be willing to
be hit by your own weapons! You may bring into the tavern as many
weapons as
you can carry, but you may only take one dagger with you. Of
course, if you
happen to "find" an extra dagger lying around, you may fight
Florentine.
The rapier tourney will be a Bear Pit with 5-man ships (teams).
When all the
mates of one ship die, they will be replaced by the 5 mates of
the next ship.
Unfortunately for the winning crew of each bout, all wounds and
deaths are
retained from one round to the next, so if the winning ship has
only one
member left, that one person will face the next crew alone. One
point will be
awarded to the surviving ship of each round. Weapons do not have
to match
your opponents' weapons, and you may use any non-rigid parrying
device
acceptable to the marshals.
The individual torchlight rapier tourney will begin near dusk,
and will be a
resurrection tourney. The winner of each round will be awarded
one point;
shipmates will not be matched against each other. Resurrections
will begin on
the third round: the winner of the second round will be allowed
to resurrect a
shipmate for the third round, and each subsequent winner can
resurrect one
more shipmate. The tourney will be over when only one ship's crew
is left
standing. "By's" are not counted as wins, but the person matched
against the
By is still a winner. Double kills both die. The overall winner
will be the ship
with the most points for both tourneys.
For both the heavy and rapier fighting, you may either select
your teammates
ahead of time, or you may pick them when you arrive. Check-ins
start at 1:00,
and the Bar Fight and Bear Pit will start at 2:00. Don't
forget -- to check in
with the MOL, you need your fighter card, your membership card or
$1 for
the combat waiver, and your site token.
Competitions
Several competitions will be held throughout the day: Best Male
Flirt, Best
Female Flirt, Darts, and Best Song/Story/Poem (theme: "history"
of the
Barnacled Bullfrog Tavern).
The Best Flirt competitions will have four judges each of the
opposite gender.
Two of each gender judge will be identified, and two will be
incognito. If you
would like to be judged the Best Flirt, keep in mind that you'll
never know
when a judge is watching you. The judges will be observing people
throughout
the entire day.
Darts games can be played all day; the competition will be held
sometime after
all the fighting is over.
The "History of the Barnacled Bullfrog Tavern" bardic competition
will not
be a formal competition, as the tavern is usually just too noisy.
All
participants in the competition should find the judges, Kara in
Danska and
Rosine of Rowanwald, some time during the day before 6 p.m. and
perform for
them.
Sign-up sheets for the competitions as well as lists of the
identifiable judges
will be posted as Troll.
Games
Activities will include a live action Goose game, teeter-totter
tug-of-war,
Bocce, and other tavern games. Rabah's Karavan will open for
business around
7 p.m. If you have coins of the realm, please feel free to bring
them with you
and use them. If not, you may purchase chocolate coins to use in
your gambling.
Raffle
We will also hold the long-awaited raffle for the
"Martyrologium," the 16th
century reprint of the 9th century manuscript by Usuardus. For
just $1, you
might own this wonderful piece of history! Read all the details
on our
"Martyrologium" web page.
Lunch
A light lunch, served buffet style, will be available for a
donation. We will
begin serving at 1:00 and end when the food runs out. Hot and
cold
non-alcoholic beverages will be available all day.
Supper
There will not be a formal feast. Lady Felicia Catriona Morgan
(Barbara
Dodge) will prepare standard tavern fare, and the wenches will
begin serving
supper around 6 or 7 p.m. They will quit serving supper at 10
p.m. or when the
food runs out. If you have any dietary restrictions, including
vegetarian,
please contact her.

Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel, into Suffolk. Take the Rt. 17
exit (exit 9,
Bridge Road). The exit forks - take the right fork for Rt. 17
North. Go
straight at the stoplight at the end of the off ramp. Go approx.
3 miles on Rt.

"Bennets
Creek Lane") -- if you cross the Nansemond River you went too
far. Turn left
onto Bennets Pasture Road. Go approx. 3 miles and turn right onto
Sleepy Hole
Road (629), then go about a mile and turn right onto Planter's
Club Road. The
site is at the end of the road
From the West and Southwest
Take your best route to US-58 East in Suffolk. Turn left onto
Nansemond

** Take your best route to the intersection of I-64, I-264, and
I-664 in
western Chesapeake (for most of us, that will be I-264 westbound
through
downtown Norfolk and through the Downtown Tunnel). Go north on
I-664.
Take the Rt. 337 W/Portsmouth Blvd. exit (exit 11A). After about
4 miles,
take a slight right onto Rt. 125, where 337 takes a steep curve
to the left.
Follow it for 2/10ths of a mile, and turn right onto Rt. 629
(Driver Lane).
629/Driver Lane will become Sleepy Hole Road - follow this road
for a total
of almost two miles. Go about a mile and turn right onto
Planter's Club Road.
