I understand that this movie has been panned on other lists, and I've heard
that it's embarrassing to watch.
Wrong.
If you are the kind of person who gets the humor in a Monty Python movie,
who enjoys the absurdity of the modern juxtaposed with the medieval, or who
can laugh at yourself, you will love this movie.
It's a comedy, a love story, an action-packed thriller, and a heart-tugging
drama. It has everything that a really good movie should have -- characters
you believe and believe in, a plot that's a little far-fetched but certainly
not out of the realm of possibilities, great music, wonderful special
effects (they show a huge medieval city from above), and camera-work that
makes you feel like you're there.
It's fun.
Here's what this movie is *not*: It's not a documentary. It's not a
dramatic reenactment of a historical event. It's not a drama set in
medieval Europe with a nitty-gritty feel of realism to it. It doesn't give
you great medieval garb. It's not a morality tale. It's probably not going
to teach you anything. There's no deep meaning, and no particular attempt
at symbolism or parallels (that I could see). It's not exactly a spoof,
and it's not as extreme as a farce. It's *way* more subtle than Monty
Python.
It's just a hoot, and you should go see it with that attitude. The stuff
that was modern and "wrong" is the stuff that makes this movie as funny as
it is. Absolute purists with no sense of humor need not apply.
For the four of us who went to see it tonight (okay, last night), this movie
is definitely "OMG, I love this movie, they did everything perfect, I MUST
OWN THIS ON DVD." And we don't even have a DVD player yet!
