River Point, Canton of. Name and device.
Or, a pall wavy purpure, in chief a tower sable, overall a laurel
wreath vert.
Submitted as River's Point. You say that you are most concerned
about the meaning, which you interpret as land at the confluence of
two rivers.' However, the Atlantian CoH was unable to find anything
like this in either Ekwall's Concise Oxford Dictionary of English
Place-names or Smith's English Place Name Elements. (This is not
surprising; English rivers often look like creeks' to Americans, so
that their confluence is nothing notable on which to base a
placename.)
However, the OED dates point' meaning a "tapering extremity of any
promontory or piece of land running into the sea: often in
geographical names, as Start Point, Point of Ardnamurchan. Also, A
peak of a mountain or hill." to late period, with a generic mention
in 1553 and a named point in 1585. Ekwall, p. 439, s.n. Start
Point, says: "[the Sterte c. 1540 Leland}. OE steort tail', also
promontory'. The point gave its name to Start Farm [La Sterte 1309
Ch.]"
A survey of a map of Great Britain shows a great number of named
points: Haverigg Point, Lizard Point, Newton Point, Prawle Point, and
Castle Point are typical. All of these points appear to have been
named for a nearby town. Ekwall dates all of these town names to
period: Haverigg p. 226, 1190; Lizard , p. 301 Lisart, DB; Newton, p.
341, DB; Prawle, p. 373, 1242.
Ekwall, p. 389, has three entries for towns named River' or
Rivar'; one apparently derives from Ofr rivere river', and the
others from OE yfer edge, brow of a hill'. Rivere, 1396.
We believe that River Point', a promontory or hill peak near the
town of River, is a plausible construction for a geographical name.
Siban ingen Dhomnaill. Name. (See Returns for device.)
submitted as Siban ingen Domnaill; we have lenited the patronymic.
Tarvin, Shire of. Branch name and device.
Or, a bend sinister sable, on a delf ploye overall counterchanged a
laurel wreath sable.
Tessa of Crossgate. Name and device.
Azure, on a bend sinister between two hearts argent, a cross barby
sable.
Wulf de Langhemerc. Name and device.
