you can purchase skinned rattan directly from hh perkins co.
if the piece is really straight you can use a lathe and sand paper. there
is also a tool (i imagine its quite expensive though) that will strip the
husk from rattan or other oddly shaped poles. i dont remember the name off
the top of my head.
you can use a hand planer (like i use to make my swords). this is an easy
way to do it but wont give you a perfectly straight piece, it will allow you
to leave some husk on for strength.
downside;
they will break pretty easily. this can be somewhat avoided by doing some
end to end runs with high quality fiber tape, but that adds some weight
back.
